Inspired by our post on applying htv to a ceramic mug we tried ironing heat transfer vinyl on glass acrylic leather canvas cardstock doormats metal felt carpet clay cork granite marble tile linoleum mirror acrylic and even a basketball.
Can i use heat transfer vinyl on canvas.
Now grab your canvas.
I had never tried using heat transfer vinyl on a canvas before i was missing out.
Once the letters were sticking to my transfer paper i carefully pulled the paper back making sure all the text stuck to the paper.
Can heat transfer vinyl be applied to metal.
Since it transfers with heat the vinyl can melt into the canvas and adhere better.

Applying the vinyl to the canvas.
Seriously the easiest and fastest way to make signs and ahem why the small heat press is my favorite.
You re going to need your heat press and or your iron warmed up.
Now that your canvas is prepped we are ready to stick on the vinyl.

The secret to getting 651 vinyl or any kind of vinyl to stick on a canvas.
I prefer to use clear contact paper to transfer my vinyl.
But with a canvas there is a little give when you push on it and you want to be able to push firmly.
Canvas tips check the vinyl after the final press for the texture of the canvas showing through.

For this project i used heat transfer vinyl or htv to make my own artwork and you can too.
I do want to mention transfer paper really quick.
I started to figure out how to use htv on canvas wood polyester leather and even on a towel.
I know that htv is typically used to personalize t shirts but of course canvas is a fabric too so i thought i would use the heat transfer properties of htv and the cutting properties of my scan n cut to create a nice piece of art.
My heat press has a 15x15 plate.
Cut and weed the heat transfer vinyl.
I used transfer paper and yes that is a cooking spatula to rub down the vinyl and get the letters to stick to my transfer paper.
First up though canvases have some give to them so you ll need to put something under it so that you can push down in the middle of.

There are obviously many items made out of metal that htv can be applied to.
Since you re using heat transfer vinyl it s going to transfer with heat aka your iron or a heat press.
Some of the transfer paper brands are entirely too sticky.
This is a sign that your htv has completely adhered to the canvas.
The only exception to this is when you are using glitter vinyl it needs a super sticky transfer paper.
