Can I Put Vinyl Down Over Carpet

I m installing laminate over a kitchen floor with vinyl flooring extending to living room that was carpeted.

Can i put vinyl down over carpet.

On the face of it installing new carpet over the old carpet does have some advantages. Is it like an indoor outdoor carpet. The carpet just goes right over the top of the pad.
