Instead of installing upper cabinets you could simply run a long shelf across the tops of the upright cabinets.

Standard base cabinets measure 34 1 2 high for a 36 high work surface with a 1 1 2 countertop. While still on the ground attach the doors with four hinges each using a self centering bit. The 1x2 in the front should form a lip to prevent things from sliding off easily. Measure how tall you need the bottom shelf and mark for reference.

Build the upper cabinets with the same techniques and materials used for the uprights. The upper cabinets provide deep enclosed storage space and tie the upright cabinets together so they can t twist away from the wall.
